Rome, Italy

Rome, Italy

I have wanted to go to Italy for as long as I can remember. My fantasies were fueled in adolescence by Hollywood movies, books and cooking shows. When I finally made it this year, as much as I didn’t want to be a dumb tourist, I was…and I loved it. I decided on this trip that places this special are worth 2 visits – one to be a tourist and another to live like a local.

Upon arriving from Madrid sick as a dog, I dosed up on the overseas version of Sudafed. I then threw my things in a corner and hurried out to see the town – armed with a pocketful of Kleenex.

They say Italia is the land of love, but maneuvering among herds of tourists, with a runny nose and pounding head, I didn’t feel the least bit romantic.  Initially, I wandered the streets like the rest of the drove, checking off of my bucket list the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and Coliseum.

I got my tourist on indulging in gluttonous behavior, drinking too much wine and taking a million photos.
I witnessed the beauty that has inspired artists for millennia and, admittedly, was impressed and humbled by it all.

Art was everywhere and the age of the statues and buildings was betrayed by the oft cemented-over craquelure.

I could imagine the coliseum in its grandeur before Christ – masses and social classes coming together here.
I was speechless at the size and grandeur of St. Peter’s Basilica. How amazing that one person could create beauty that would last for thousands of years.

Were there a million and one tourists crawlin’ around here? Yes, absolutely. Worth the experience and a second trip? Hell yeah.

NEXT: Moving on to Barga…
