I spent the past week island hopping in Greece visiting Corfu, Santorini, Mykonos, and Katakolon, (Olympia).

If there was one thing I learned there, it was how MUCH of contemporary American culture and language comes from the Greeks. Everything from architecture, democracy, The Olympics, and literature to Nike, (the Greek goddess personifying victory.)

I, (please don’t hate me animal activists), rode a donkey up the hill in Santorini and played with the feral cats that were EVERYWHERE.

I took an ATV across the entire island of Mykonos.

I enjoyed  a private tour of Olympia Land winery and some fantastic blends and vineyard-grown olives.

I enjoyed local fare of Moussaka and stuffed tomatoes, hummus and Tzatziki.

One of the coolest memories I have from Greece, though, is the race to the sunset in Oui.

I was on a mission to see a sunset here at the ‘place with all the blue domes.’ I had heard it has among the best sunsets in the world. That same day, however, I wanted to also see the red beach, which was on the other side of the island and a distant walk from any transportation to Oui. As the sun lowered in the sky, I broke into a run to try and catch the last bus. It was jam-packed and, although I am not claustrophobic, I was breathing heavily pressed uncomfortably against a window praying I would make it in time. 1 bus and 2 taxis later I arrived in Oui at 20 minutes to sunset. I was following the golden lit cobblestone path trying to find a restaurant with a view.

Everywhere was SO packed with people! As luck would have it, just as I was about to give up the dream of having a seat for this spectacle, I saw a rooftop restaurant to my right and dashed up the stairs just in time to grab the last vacant table in the place. The waiter closed the entrance right behind me. I felt an ocean of gratitude as I saw rows of people standing below. Luckily still, the restaurant made its own wine, a refreshing white blend that I savored.

This truly was a moment I will remember always.
